The general intellect of the collectives that don’t know that they are collectives yet, beginning with the single cell – because this can and needs to be discovered always all over again.
METROPOLIS M:
Who is your favorite hero of fiction?
Who are your heroes in real life?
Who are your heroes in real life?
Anselm Franke:
The two aspects become interesting only when combined – perhaps TH Lawrence? Quote “I needed to do that (become the leader of the Arab rebellion, outmimicking the arabs in their heroism - AF) in order to be able to become writer, a poet”. The heroic age of male subjectivity “at the margins” (Kaja Silverman) is over, thanks god. Unfortuneately, the demand for heroes has not flattened, but the quality of the heroes has. Lawrence seems pretty much to hit the possible limit of heroic gestures – included, of course, that he is losing himself constantly, always almost or beyond. History did justice to him by turning the legend into an epic film, Lawrence’s heroism can only be outmimicked on screen….
METROPOLIS M:
Most treasured possession?
Anselm Franke:
According to treasure-value: A work by Jimmie Durham, given to me by him as payment for an article.
METROPOLIS M:
Do you prefer to work alone or collaboratively?
Anselm Franke:
When you are alone, you wish to work together, in a group, you wish to be alone – I value working together very high. I hear that I am difficult, but I find others also terribly difficult. In difficult situations, one needs close allies, the only way to survive is to conspire.
METROPOLIS M:

Anselm Franke:
My ancestors.
METROPOLIS M:

Anselm Franke:
Then consequently: the command over the spirit world
