Perhaps the only objection an art lover could have to Berlin is the way its galleries are scattered all over the city. The majority let photography and painting rule the gallery space this month. The choices appear safe, but luckily, safe doesn´t necessarily mean boring.
The famous photography biennial of Bamako has grown into the most authoritative photography event for photography on the African continent. Bamako is becoming increasingly important in terms of how contemporary African photography is judged.

'We are deranged' Markus Schinwald
21/12/06 Christina Werner
Suddenly at the centre of a hype, Markus Schinwald (b. 1973) is not happy with all the attention his work is getting, which goes along with the interest in the essence of man, sex and passion that seems to be cropping up everywhere. This type of art, which nowadays he is sometimes associated with, he calls 'psycho-kitsch', while his own work is of a more conceptual nature. Time to set things right.

For Barbara Visser, it is harvest time. Curator Moritz Küng asked her about the choices she has made in order to present her work – in both the book and the exhibition – in the retrospective model.
